Imagine taking your dog for a walk and coming home $10 million richer. That’s what happened to a Northern California couple earlier this month. They were walking along their property when they saw something: cans of gold coins.

The couple wishes to remain anonymous after their find but as they dug they found eight metal cans of gold coins, 1,400 gold coins in all. No one knows how they got there, who put them there or who they belonged to. No matter, the coins belong to them now!

The treasure is known as the Saddle Ridge Hoard and is worth a fortune. Most coins were minted in San Francisco between 1847 and 1894 and most are $5, $10 and $20 coins. Most of the coins are in excellent shape including 14 that are considered the finest known for their date and mint mark.

The couple is planning on selling most of the collection which is estimated at $10 million or more.
