16 year old Makenzie Wethington of Joshua, Texas is one lucky girl. She survived a skydiving outing when her parachute malfunctioned from 3,500 feet. It was her first jump, a dream she had always had, but her parachute didn’t open. It got tangled and Makenzie plummeted to the ground.

Since she was a little girl she had always wanted to try parachute jumping and on her 16th birthday her father decided to take her to Pegasus Air Sport in Chickasha, Oklahoma, for her first jump. After getting instructions, including how to use the reserve shoot if the main chute failed, it was off and up to 3,500 feet.

As her sister watched from the ground she could tell there was problem right away when Mackenzie’s parachute didn’t open. Somehow she survived.

She didn’t come out the ordeal without injuries; she has a shattered pelvis, broken vertebrae and internal bleeding. She is in intensive care at an Oklahoma City hospital and breathing on her own. Although she has a long way to go, she is expected to make a full recovery.
