According to the Maine State Police, a former student at Dirigo High School in Dixfield was killed late last night (May 31) in a one car crash in Weld.  Two other current students were injured and speed appears to be a likely cause.

Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said Griffyn Smith of Dixfield, 19 who graduated from Dirigo in 2016, was killed in the crash.

McCausland said the crash took place on the West Side Road about 11:30 pm.  Troopers said the 2005 Toyota Corolla went out of control, struck a tree, and overturned.

According to McCausland, the car was driven by Ethyn Buotte, 18, of Dixfield.  Buotte’s second passenger was a 17 year old girl, whose name was not immediately available.  Both are being treated at the Rumford hospital with injuries, not believed to be life threatening, according to McCausland.

Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies and the Weld Fire Department assisted troopers at the crash site and the district attorney’s office was also consulted.   The crash investigation continues.
