Two men died and a woman suffered serious injuries while kayaking off the coast of Maine Wednesday.

When the Three didn’t arrive by 6:30 p.m., the wife of one of the men notified the Coast Guard, triggering a search that involved the Maine Marine Patrol and “good Samaritan” civilians. The woman was found clinging to the side of an overturned kayak at around 8 p.m., she was hypothermic and unable to speak, and was taken to Bangor hospital.

The two men were found a couple of hours later and they were unresponsive and taken to Prospect Harbor where paramedics pronounced them dead.

Local boaters who helped in the search were the ones who found the three according Coast Guard command duty officer Kenneth Stuart. The Coast Guard will work to determine what happened and how to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
