A few days away from Halloween and we've put a lot of stuff on our websites about ghosts and creatures around Maine.  But, since Maine is on the Atlantic Ocean, it'd be weird if we didn't at least mention some of the scary stuff that happens on Maine's waterways.

Here are 5 creepy creatures that infest Maine lakes, ponds rivers, and coastline from Only In Your State.

5. The Curse Of The Saco River (York)

This story dates back to the 1500s.  When a couple of sailors threw a woman and her child over the falls, killing them (duh), the father allegedly put a curse on the river saying that the river monster must kill at least three white men per year to avenge their deaths.

4. The Creatures Of Mount Desert Island

The first sighting of a 60 foot serpent was in 1793 by Captain Crabtree.  Even though the monster looked at his ship, it was far more interested in birds fly above it.  there were sightings of the same monster into the early 1900s.

3. Ponik, The Monster Of Pohenagamook Lake

This monster was first spotted in 1873, walking down the beach spitting fire like a dragon.  It was spotted again in 1990 by a man boating on the lake.  In 1997, a local business offered a $500,000 reward for photographic evidence.  So far, no one has collected the reward.

2. The Monster Of Pocomoonshine (Princeton)

Since 1873, many people have reported seeing snake-like monsters near this Washington County lake.  According to reports, they are between 30 and 60 feet in length.  No photos of the monsters exist.

1. Cassie, The Monster Of Casco Bay

Edward Preble was the first person to spot the 45 foot long monster in Penobscot Bay.  His captain ordered him to row over and check it out.  As he approached, the monster lifted its head out of the water, looked at Preble, and swam away.  The monster has been spotted numerous times over the years.
