6 Modern Horror Movies as ’80s Young Adult Novels

YA Horror
Kristy Puchko

In the late ’80s/early ’90s, how many of you were glued to books by people like Christopher Pike, R.L. Stine and A. Bates? Long before ‘Twilight,’ these young adult authors were churning out sordid tales of psycho teenage killers, body-switching beautiful girls and revenge fantasies that also somehow involved final exams.

We miss those books, and we would love to see them come back and take on some of our current horror movies…while still involving teenagers. Take a look at some current horror films reimagined as retro YA novels. (Photoshops by Kristy Puchko.)

'Paranormal Activity 4: The Prom'

Jackie has thrown everything into setting up the perfect prom for her high school, but balloons keep popping, punch keeps spilling and chairs keep stacking themselves when nobody's looking. Is it a prankster who doesn't want Jackie to have a great prom, or is it a demon??!!!

'Cabin in the Woods'

This book is exactly the same as the movie, except take out the (SPOILER ALERT!) plot twist that it's a corporation scaring the teenagers in the cabin. Instead, it's the ghost of a girl that died of alcohol poisoning the year before. But, other than that, exactly the same.

'Prometheus'

It's high school in space, but when class clown Winston decides to take in a pet alien, he gets more than he bargained for. Specifically, he gets inhabited by an ancient predatory alien monster. The ensuing chaos divides the high school along clique lines, with the popular kids suspicious of the theater kids and the goth kids.

'Evil Dead' (2013)

Lana is trying to kick drugs, but also there's a demon trying to kick her. Or is there? It turns out that it's her friend Brienne (who got her hooked on drugs in the first place) convincing everyone that Lana is possessed as well as an addict. Also Brienne is mad that Lana stole her boyfriend in middle school.

'Zombieland'

There are zombies, sure, but the biggest problem in Zach's life is finding a girlfriend! Maybe Doris, the mysterious tough young woman he meets on the road, could be the one? (In other words, it's the plot to 'Zombieland.')

'Human Centipede'

Human Centipede Young Adult

High school is tough. Especially when your principal is hiding a dark secret -- years ago his daughter was killed in a freak port-a-potty accident, and he's been seething and plotting all these years, waiting for the other kids involved in the accident to get to high school, so he can give them an ad hoc lesson on the human digestive system.
