Insurers are seeking significant premium hikes under President Barack Obama's health care law in the coming year in Maine.

Proposals filed with the Maine Bureau of Insurance would raise individual plan premiums between 14 percent and 23 percent in 2017 under the health care law's marketplace. All told, more than 84,000 Mainers are signed up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

The proposed increases were anticipated.

But the federal government says those premium increases are offset by tax credits received by 87 percent of Maine consumers who utilize the ACA marketplace.

The deadline for the proposals was Tuesday in Maine, and it's possible the increases could be knocked back after a review by state and federal regulators. (AP)
