The peak season in Maine for lobster when it is most abundant and has the best flavor is from mid-summer to mid-fall. This is also the time for soft lobster or ‘shedders’.

According to Travel and Leisure here are some of the best lobster shacks in Maine.

Five Island Lobster Company in Georgetown. No indoor seating but can watch sailboats, seagulls and sunsets. Choose your own lobster from the tank and a side of corn on the cob.

Waterman’s Beach Lobster, South in Thomaston. It sits between a meadow and rocky beach with two dozen picnic tables and a tented deck. Lobsters are steamed over salt water.

Red's Eats, Wiscasset. A roadside hut just south of the Route 1 Bridge serves a whole lobster worth of meat over flowing from a hot dog bun. Mayo or butter on the side.

Young’s Lobster Pound, Belfast. Get lobster steamed or boiled brought in fresh from the sea daily. You can get the ‘bucket list for 2’: two lobsters, two ears of corn, four steamers, mussels and shrimp.

There are many great lobster shacks in Maine, all worth a try if you’re looking for a new adventure and new place to enjoy Maine’s delicacy.
