Still reeling from the news that George Jones passed away on Friday, April 26, Alan Jackson took some time to pay tribute to The Possum last weekend. During a stop on his current tour, Jackson covered 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' for a mesmerized crowd in Birmingham, Ala.

'He Stopped Loving Her Today' is one of Jones' most popular songs, and it's one that The Possum credited for salvaging his fledgling career in the 1980s. It's only fitting that a country singer would cover the Grammy-winning tune to pay homage to Jones.

Jackson made it through the song without shedding any tears, but he did look pensive and slightly sad while singing. A shot of the crowd reveals that the normally rowdy group of country music fans was practically silent, except for a few cheers at certain points of the song.

Although Jackson's country twang was a great addition to 'He Stopped Loving Her Today,' Jones fans can't help but notice that the song isn't quite right without The Possum's deep, grizzled voice.

When Jackson closed out the last few notes of the song, he paused to dedicate the performance to Jones.

"That's for George Jones, my friend, and the greatest country music singer of all time," he said. Then he added, "We love you, George! Tell Jesus we said 'Hey,'" with a smile on his face.
