Thrillist.com has complied a list of the 50 states plus Washington D.C. and ranked them on how likely you are to die in a car accident. They combined government data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Highway Administration.

I was surprised by the findings. I was thinking the less populated states, like Maine would be the safest. That was not the case. Maine was right in the middle of the rankings at #26.

Washington D.C followed by Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York were the states that you are least likely to die in a car accident.

Montana was the state that you are most likely to die in a car accident, followed by Mississippi and North Dakota.

Here are some of the stats for Maine:
1/9,161 dying in a car crash
1/4,901 involved in a fatal car crash
Total Population: 1,328,302
Total number of deaths in 2013: 145
92% of adults have a drivers license in Maine and Mainers average just 14,00 miles per year.

Here's the entire rankings.
