American Idol is coming back! Maybe. Reports indicate that ABC will bring back the long-running Fox reality singing competition that spawned the careers of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery and more.

One year after the final season closed with Ryan Seacrest saying “Goodbye … for now,” reports that the machine is going to soon be up and running again are making headlines. TMZ has been most aggressive with details, saying only a few details need to be set into place to clear the way for a March 2018 premiere of Season 16 of American Idol. Country trade website All Access also reported the news.

The new incarnation of the show would be shot in Hollywood, despite speculation that it’d follow Seacrest to New York City as he begins working on Live With Kelly and Ryan. All indications are that he will not be hosting the show. So who will?

There’s no word on frontrunners for any judges’ chairs or the hosting slot. Most recently Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. filled in as judges, becoming a very popular trio. Big Machine Label Group CEO Scott Borchetta was the mentor. Do you remember who won Season 15?

That was Trent Harmon. The soulful singer has had mild success on country radio since, with “There’s a Girl” recently becoming a Top 20 hit. More notable was the show’s third artist with a No. 1 country song. Lauren Alaina joined Josh Gracin and Underwood as the only country chart-toppers when her song “Road Less Traveled” peaked this spring.
