Are You ‘Middle Class’? Check out This Chart to See How You Are Doing.

How are you doing…you know…financially?  I thought this was an interesting chart on what is deemed to be ‘middle class’ in Maine and around the nation.

Well, the range of what is considered middle class is generous.  According to the chart lower middle class starts at just over $31,000 and the upper end is just under $94,000.  Let’s just say, I have some room for growth before I leave my middle class standing.  Median income in Maine is almost $47,000.

How many Mainers are middle class is down since 2000 from 51.6% to 46.9%  in 2013. The average income is DOWN in that time frame but this was very interesting to me, the share of household spending at 30% on housing was 26% in 2000 and for 2013 it was 34%. We make less and spend more to keep a roof over our heads!
