The National Weather Service in Gray has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area.

According to the National Weather Service, around 4 pm, doppler radar indicated a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing half dollar size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. These storms were located along a line extending from 11 miles north of Skowhegan to Jay and the weather service reported they were moving east at 25 mph.

The warning impacts the towns of Waterville, Farmington, Fairfield, Oakland, Pittsfield, Skowhegan, Madison, Jay, Clinton, Belgrade, Livermore Falls, Bingham, Wilton, Norridgewock, Unity, Benton, Anson, Canaan, Livermore and Hartland.

According to the weather service, severe thunderstorms produce damaging winds, destructive hail, deadly lightning and very heavy rain. For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of your home or business. Heavy rains flood roads quickly so do not drive into areas where water covers the road.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
