The state Fire Marshal's Office has charged a Bingham man last night with arson. The fires in Bingham destroyed the town's public works garage. Brandon L. Sherwood, 29, was charged with one count of arson.Investigators say Sherwood became a suspect when he was seen near the garage looking for his dog after firefighters were sent to the blaze. They later found his dog dead in the rubble of the building. The pit bull-lab mix was apparently in the building when a flammable liquid was used to start the fire and the dog was trapped inside.

Investigators also say Sherwood is a suspect in a second fire that happened on the same night that damaged an ice cream shop in Bingham.

Sherwood was taken to the Somerset County Jail. Bail was set at $100,000.
