Two men from Massachusetts were arrested and charged with unlawful trafficking of marijuana after Augusta police seized over 2 pounds of marijuana and $420 in cash.

According to a release from Augusta Deputy Chief Jared Mills, Rory Kavanagh, 20, of Georgetown, Mass. and Nicholas Caponigro, 24, of Amesbury, Mass. were arrested and charged with Unlawful Trafficking of Drugs (Class C).  Mills said Caponigro was also charged with Criminal Forfeiture of Property.

Mills said at shortly after 5:30PM on March 16, off-duty Maine State Police Trooper Andrew Hardy observed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Red Robin that appeared to be engaged in a hand to hand drug transaction.

According to Mills, Hardy alerted the Augusta police, and Officer Laura Drouin went to the area and she located the suspects' vehicle in the parking lot of Wal-Mart.

Mills said Drouin made contact with  Kavanagh, who was driving the car and his passenger, Caponigro. Mills said a search of the vehicle yielded a total of 2.13 pounds of marijuana and $420 in cash.

A Maine State Police Drug K-9 also assisted with the search of the vehicle, Mills added. According to Mills, Kavanagh’s bail was set at $1,000 and Caponigro’s bail was set at $2,000. Both men are being held at the Kennebec County Jail.
