‘Prankster’ Australian D.J.’s Speak for First Time

The Australian radio disc jockeys that prank-called London’s King Edward VII hospital last week spoke about the incident for the first time. Mel Greig and Michael Christian admitted that they are ‘shattered, gutted, heartbroken.’

In the TV interview they discussed the suicide of Jacintha Saldana, the hospital nurse who helped care for pregnant Kate Middleton. Saldana was fooled by the pair’s hoax. She mistook the pranksters for the Duchess of Cambridge’s royal relatives and passed along the phone to a colleague. They were then given confidential information about Middleton’s condition.

Greig said her first thought after learning of Saldanha’s death was if she was a mother. She was. The nurse left behind a husband, Ben Barboza, and two young children. Grieg said, ‘I’ve wanted to just reach out to them and just give them a big hug and say sorry. I hope they’re okay, I really do. I hope they get through this.’

Her partner Christian also struggled to get through the interview, saying, ‘I hope that they get the love, the support, the care that they need, you know.’

During the phone prank last week the pair impersonated Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip and claim that they were flabbergasted their ruse was successful. They are currently on an indefinite leave of absence from their radio station, 2DayFM.

Kate Middleton and Prince William have not explicitly commented on the prank itself, but mourned Jacintha’s death saying their ‘thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.
