The Maine Secretary of State’s office has released the results from student mock elections throughout the state. The results include more than 185 schools but not the 60 others that hadn’t submitted their results to the Secretary of State’s office by the late Monday deadline.

Influenza has officially arrived in Maine. The first two positive influenza 'A' cases were detected early last week. According to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) these cases were in a young adult from Aroostook county and a teenager from Penobscot county.

Shaw’s Supermarkets announced today that they will lay off about 700 employees throughout New England. The grocery store chain did not reveal how many of those layoffs would take place at the 22 stores in Maine. About 90 affected employees have already been informed and the rest will be told during the next several days.

Governor Paul LePage has declared a state of emergency as the state Maine deals with the effects of Sandy. The statute allowing the declaration states: "In the event of disaster beyond local control, the governor may assume direct operational control over all or any part of the emergency management and public safety functions within the state."
