The world’s first motel celebrated their 88th anniversary on December 12th. The motel was built in 1925 when driving a car to get to your destination or vacation was becoming popular. Before the ‘motel’, people had to stay at more traditional hotels or camp out.
In this day and age it seems hard to believe, but for the first time in Iceland’s history police shot a killed a person. The first time ever! The police, like most in the country, were unarmed when they were called to investigate an apartment building where there were reports of a loud bang.
A new world record for a cold temperature has been recorded in east Antarctica at -135.8 degrees. Newly analyzed satellite data show the temperature was reached in August of 2010. This year in July it almost reached that same temperature when the reading dipped to -135.3 degrees.
The search is on in Florida for a truck that was stolen in Deland that contained $120,000 worth of Hershey’s chocolate. A 58 year old man from Oregon decided to buy a tank, sounded like a good idea, getting the 50 ton battle tank home was a little more difficult than he thought it would be. The tank, a Chieftain built in 1969, was transported by a tractor trailer, but when the trailer couldn’t make it up the hill to the man’s home, the driver dropped it off at a turnout along the highway. No problem, let’s just start the tank and drive it up. Wrong!

Gas prices are something we all keep an eye on: are they going up, are they going down? The last I saw was $3.44 a gallon with the average in Maine at $3.47. Democratic Congressman Earl Blumenaurer is pushing to double the gas tax to .33 cent a gallon. There is currently an 18.5 cent federal gas tax on every gallon of gas we buy and the Representative from Oregon says it’s time to raise it.
