Some interesting and stand-out accomplishments in sports occurred on this day, February 24, in sports history. Some of the highlights: in 1960 the U.S. Olympic hockey team defeated Germany 9-1 in the final rounds to win the United States first gold medal in hockey. This medal win is known as the ‘forgotten miracle’ because the U.S. was not considered to have a chance to win.
Getting ready for the beginning of the NASCAR season with the Daytona 500 today, USA Today’s sports writer, Jeff Gluck, will do a weekly series of questions with NASCAR drivers. The first weeks questions were put to Dale Earnhardt Jr. and some of the non-related race questions were interesting.
It seems every year the world is facing an apocalypse, the end of the world. So far so good: we’re still here. In 1910, when Haley’s Comet was coming, scientists thought it would be the end. In 1997, Heaven’s Gate thought an alien ship was following a comet. One of the biggest recently was Y2k: that was supposed to happened on January 1, 2000. Most recently, two years ago, the end of the Mayan calendar was supposed to be the end the world.

The Clowns of America International is the country’s largest trade organization and President Glen Kohlberger is worried because membership is declining fast. Rob Dyrdek, who stars in MTV’s Fantasy Factory and has broken 21 skateboarding records including the longest board slide, has another record to his credit. It wasn’t a skateboard record this time; it was a car jumping record…backwards! It was the farthest reverse ramp jump over a car clearing 89 feet and three quarter inches.
With Washington’s Birthday coming up on February 22, here some interesting facts about the country’s first President. He was actually born on February 11, 1731, but shortly after the Gregorian calendar came into effect his birthdate (which he celebrated) became February 22, 1732.
