Bangor’s newly appointed police Chief Mark Hathaway is recovering today from a gunshot wound.

This from a press release issued this morning from Bangor City Manager Catherine Conlow:

On June 24, 2013 at 5 p.m., members of the Bangor Police Department had completed firearm transition training in Brewer.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., while officers were cleaning their new guns at the Bangor Police Station, Chief Mark Hathaway sustained a non-life threatening injury to his left hand in what appears to be an accidental discharge of his duty weapon.

He was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center and treated and released. The incident remains under investigation by Lt. Tim Reid, the Bangor Police Department’s shooting incident supervisor.

“At first blush it appears to be an accident. We have consulted with the AG’s Office and DA’s Office and who have indicated that it is a matter to be investigated internally.  Lt. Tim Reid will be conducting the investigation and reporting the findings of that investigation directly to me.  Although it appears to simply be an accident, we will investigate all potential causes for the discharge. I will then determine what, if any, follow-up action is appropriate. We are thankful that the injury was non-life threatening and that no-one else was hurt,” stated Conlow.
