A Belfast, Maine high school junior was sent to the principals office last week for not participating in the Pledge of Allegiance. Now, the school district superintendent says the student should not have been sent to the principal's office for refusing.

RSU 20 superintendent Brian Carpenter has sent out an email to district staff informing everyone that stduents do not have to stand or recite the pledge.

Attorneys for the Washington D.C-based American Humanist Association sent a letter to the school district that said punishing the student violated the law and the student's civil rights.

This just comes weeks after a South Portland high school student added the words 'if you'd like to' to her daily invitations to students in saying the pledge.
