Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer, is just a few weeks away and Mainers and Americans will be taking to the roads for vacation. WalletHub.com did a study with 20 key metrics that ranked the fifty states in order of being the best for summer road trips.

Maine is known as 'Vacation Land', but Maine finished 28th on the list of 'Best States for Summer Road Trips'. What hurt Maine was the high driving and lodging costs, ranking 43rd. Maine did rank 10th for road conditions and safety and Maine was 24th when it came to fun and scenic attractions.

Maine was second in fewest car thefts per capita, however, we had high camping costs/
