Congratulations to Waterville High School's, Bethanie Brown. She's been named the 'Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year for Maine.'

It's been quite a year. She won the Class B state championship and went on to finish seventh at the New England meet and 11th at the Foot Locker Northeast Regionals. Bethanie told the Morning Sentinel that "It's pretty exciting. It's nice to be rewarded for all my hard work. It really is an honor."

According to USA Today, "She has received her school’s Renaissance Award, given to students who excel in academics, service and character on behalf of the national Renaissance Program. A Student Ambassador for incoming transfer pupils, Brown has also donated her time promoting science studies in local fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms."

Gatorade, through ESPN HS which conducts the selection process, recognizes outstanding athletic and academic excellence. Brown fits that bill. She maintains a 4.27 weighted grade point average, which by the way is first in her class.

Bethanie plans to continue her love for running and competing next year at the University of Connecticut.
