This is a first for Maine.  The first confirmed sighting of a colorful species of bird from the Southwest section of the United States.

The National Audubon Society spotted the bird on Hogs Island as they were monitoring nesting ospreys. A web cam is set up on Hogs Island and camera pick up a ‘vermilion flycatcher’ which is called an incredible rarity in these parts.

The bird usually stays close to home which is the Southwest part of the country so for it to be so far off course is unusual. Records show they have found their way to Washington State and Quebec but never has one been recorded sighted in Maine, until now.

According to pressherald.com the small birds that display red feathers are the male of the species and they feed on insects that they usually catch in midflight.
