This year’s Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will feature blues singer Susan Tededchi and Ayla Brown, but it will not be nationally televised for the first time in 20 years. CBS said ratings for the July 4th show had been declining in recent years, so they have pulled the plug.

The contract was up for renewal this year and the show’s executive producer, David Mugar, said that CBS has declined to renew the event. The Spectacular is held at the Charles River Esplanade and is free of charge for the nearly 500,000 that attend each year. Although the show will not be shown nationally, it still will be broadcast locally in the Boston area on WBZ-TV.
