An emotional John Farrell announced Friday (Aug. 14) that he will be out for the rest of the season as he undergoes chemotherapy for cancer that was recently diagnosed.

During the off day on Monday, The Boston Red Sox skipper, stayed in Detroit for hernia surgery. During that procedure doctors discovered a cancerous mass and he was told that he has stage 1 lymphoma. Chemotherapy treatments will start on Tuesday at Mass General Hospital and take nine weeks. Farrell said the treatment is his only option and said it is highly curable.

Bench coach Torey Lovullo will manage the team for the rest of the season.
