The Boston Bruins have traded talented defenseman Johnny Boychuck to the New York Islanders  in what is best described as a salary dump. The B's get two second round draft picks and a conditional third round pick.

GM Peter Chiarelli has said for weeks that he might trade a defensman because of salary cap issues. Boychuck is entering the final year of his contract and earns $3.36 million. He becomes a free agent at the end of the year.

Boychuck, who is 30 years old, was a top four defenseman.

With the Islanders, Boychuck will play for coach Jack Capuano, the former UMaine Black Bear defenseman.

NOTE:  The Bruins play their season opener Wednesday night at 7pm.
