In today’s big sports news: Roger Goodell tries to make amends with the city that despises him, we reach the semifinals of tennis’s first grand slam, a multiplayer NBA trade, and hockey fights!

The NFL lifted the yearlong suspension of Saints head coach Sean Payton, just prior to the Super Bowl, which is being held in New Orleans next Sunday, February 3. Nevertheless, commissioner Roger Goodell can likely expect a chilly reception in the Crescent City. [N.Y. Times]

The semifinals of the Australian Open, tennis’s first grand-slam tournament of the year, are halfway set. On the men’s side, top seed Novak Djokovic and fourth-seeded David Ferrer advanced. On the women’s side, second seed Maria Sharapova and sixth-seeded Li Na will meet Thursday. [Yahoo]

The Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers agreed to a five-player trade, which will send Memphis’s center Marreese Speights, guard Wayne Ellington, guard Josh Selby and a future first-round draft pick to the Cavs for forward Jon Leuer. [ESPN]

Finally, hockey is back! The fighting, at least. While the league-wide gameplay struggles to reach top form following the four-month lockout, players are dropping the gloves at a very fast pace. [Sports Illustrated]
