Travis Mills, a 26-year old Army staff sergeant, has partnered with the owners of Camp Kennebec, Joel and Crista Lavenson and the Bread of Life Ministries to establish a home for the National Veterans Recreation Center at Camp Kennebec in Belgrade.Mills was serving in Afghanistan and on April 10, 2012 he had stepped on a mine and he lost his right arm and right leg and he began a long recovery process that included a stay at the Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.

Dean LaChance, the executive director of Bread of Life Ministries, tells the Bangor Daily News that "he had a dream and a vision to have a place in Maine, on a lake, that was fully handicap-accessible, for veterans from all over the country to be able to come to, who have differing ability needs and disability needs."
