An 11 year old girl from Stuarts Draft elementary School in Virginia was not allowed to use ChapStick when her lips became chapped. In fact, none of the students in the school are allowed to use ChapStick, it is deemed ‘inappropriate’.

Grace Karaffa, when her lips where dry and bleeding, was told she was not permitted to use one of the commonly used remedies for the problem. She was told by her second grade teacher the use of ChapStick was against school policy because some kids might be allergic or they may share.

This happened when she was in second grade and it has stuck with her as she is now entering fifth grade. She has decided to do something about ‘the ChapStick thing’ and delivered a speech to the school board in support of overturning the ban. Grace’s proposal is under review and she is waiting to hear back from the school board.
