The United States' cheese championships were held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and it was a local cheese made in Thorp, Wisconsin that won first place. Merieke Pentermand, of Holland’s Family Cheese, won the top prize with Marieke Mature Gouda. More than 1,700 cheeses were entered for the cheese championship with everything from Gouda, to pepper-flavored to smoked cheeses.

Wisconsin cheeses won the most gold medals, 47 of the 81 categories judged, New York and Vermont tied for second with 6 gold medals each. First runner-up was a semi-hard alpine cheese, Tarentaise, made in Reading, Pennsylvania. Second place went to Team Cracker Barrel Natural Cheese with their medium cheddar.  The winning Gouda cheese received 98.1 points of a possible 100 in the final round to take the crown.
