Rock met country on 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon' Wednesday night (Oct. 23), when Dierks Bentley performed Pearl Jam's 'Alive' along with the band's guitarist, Mike McCready, and the Roots.

It's Pearl Jam week on 'Late Night,' which explains the unlikely pairing of the clean-cut Bentley with the grunge giants. The group are promoting their newest album, 'Lightning Bolt,' and have a full week of artists from various genres who are playing their own renditions of Pearl Jam songs to honor the band, including Soundgarden, the Avett Brothers, and Fleet Foxes.

“I love that Fallon dedicates a week of his show to iconic bands like Pearl Jam, and I will definitely be there representing as one of their biggest fans myself," Bentley said before his performance (quote via Country Weekly). "Mike and I have had a chance to collaborate before, but this will be the first time we’ve played a Pearl Jam song together for TV ... Really looking forward to it!”

The collaboration between the 'I Hold On' country singer and the trailblazing rockers was billed as a one-of-a-kind performance, and it certainly was original. Bentley looked the same as usual, clad in jeans and a T-shirt, his acoustic guitar in hand. That's about where the similarities between his country music side and newfound rocker side end.

His voice had a definite rougher quality to it during the performance, which at first was disconcerting, but fit with the music's style. As the song continued, Bentley's vocals only grew stronger, and when McCready began his snazzy guitar solo, the country star was definitely in his element. He loosened up, letting the music take over his nerves.

At the end, Fallon jumped onstage, clearly ecstatic over the performance. "That is how you do it! That is how you do it!" he exclaimed, adding, "How fun is that?".

Although Bentley seemed plenty energetic onstage, we can't help but wonder if his late night on Fallon's show was prepped by lots of late nights with his brand new son. The singer will show off more of his skills -- and perhaps a little surfing -- when he heads to Mexico for the inaugural Tropical Nights: Boots in the Sand event in February 2014. More info here.
