The state of Maine moved closer to passing a bill offered by State Senator Roger Katz, R, of Augusta. The bill would ask the federal government for permission to disallow the purchase of junk food with state and federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program funds.

The state House of Representatives passed the bill by a 73-70 vote.

The bill would also provide financial incentives for low-income families to purchase more fresh fruits and vegetables.

The bill would ban the purchase of candy, fudge, ice, liquid iced tea or coffee, soft drinks and water.

What do you think? Do you support a SNAP junk food ban?
