The Maine Department of Health and Human Services has submitted a request to prohibit candy and soft drinks from eligible Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program purchases.

 

DHHS says that 15 percent of Maine's population receives food assistance. The state of Maine paid out $115 million in obesity-related MaineCare expenses in the past year. The state argues reducing the purchase of candy and soda will help reduce those MaineCare costs.
