A new report indicates the number of overdose deaths in Maine is on par with 2016. it look like the deaths are leveling off but still averaging one death per day.

According to the Associated Press data from Maine's chief medical examiner indicates there were 185 drug overdose deaths in the first six months of the year. That's slightly less than in 2016. But officials aren't prepared to read too much into the numbers. Attorney General Janet Mills said "opioid epidemic continues to devastate our communities."

The data compiled by Dr. Marcella Sorg of the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center indicates the overdose antidote Naloxone was given to more than a third of victims. That's an increase from 25 percent the year before, suggesting more first responders and families have access to Naloxone according to AP.
