August 16th, 1977, the King of Rock 'n' Roll passed away at the age of 42. His concert in Portland for the 17th was sold out, and was to be Elvis's next stop. Sadly, a heart attack tragically took his life. He spent the morning going over details of the tour and was to fly out that afternoon. Elvis had been off the road for about six weeks, playing his final show in Indianapolis on June 26th.

As news of his passing spread, fans called radio stations to share their grief as many signals organized tributes spinning the King's music. Much like JFK, everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news. Many Mainers, my mother one of them took the news especially hard, as they had tickets to the show in Portland.

Here's footage of what would be his final show.
