Eric Church was one of dozens of artists at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday night (Jan. 12) for the Willie: Life & Songs of an American Outlaw show. In tribute to the night's honoree, Church selected Nelson's mid-'80s song "Me and Paul" for his performance.

The title track of Nelson's 1985 album Me & Paul, the song "Me and Paul" tells the tales of the travels of Nelson and his longtime drummer, Paul English: getting "busted in Laredo / But for reasons that I'd rather not disclose," stuck in Milwaukee and drunk in Buffalo before a show "with us and Kitty Wells and Charley Pride."

"I guess Nashville was the roughest / But I know I've said the same about them all," goes the chorus of "Me and Paul." "We received our education / In the cities of the nation, Me and Paul."

In addition to Church, the lineup for Willie: Life & Songs of an American Outlaw included including Chris Stapleton, Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Lee Ann Womack, Emmylou Harris and many more. During the show, Nelson and George Strait shared the stage for the very first time, performing a brand-new song called "Sing One With Willie." The two co-wrote the track — about how much they'd love to sing together, naturally — with Buddy Cannon and Strait's son Bubba; it will appear on Strait's forthcoming new album, Honky-Tonk Time Machine.

Willie: Life & Songs of an American Outlaw was filmed to air on A&E later this year. Further details about the TV special have not yet been announced.
