After experiencing chest pain while out on a run Saturday, England’s Ron Hill decided to take a day off from running on Sunday.

The decision by the champion of the 1970 Boston Marathon ended the longest recorded streak of running every day at 52 years and 39 days, or 19,033 days. Hill, 78, who suffers from an undiagnosed heart problem, said that after less than 400 meters Saturday his heart started to hurt.

Hill said he thought he might die so there was no other option but to stop.
