Bird watchers - this weekend is your weekend! It's the Feathers over Freeport weekend, an annual birdwatching weekend and festival for all ages and abilities. Activities will include live bird programs, hawk watching, osprey watching, the latest in birding technology, bird walks & talks, special programs by birding experts and authors and activities especially for children.Events on Saturday will be at Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal. Here's what is going on Saturday:

  • Bird Walk from 8am to 10am: Bring your own binoculars. Walk led by Derek and Jeanette Lovitch of Freeport Wild Bird Supply, Rich MacDonald of the Natural History Center.
  • Educational Displays from 9am to 4pm: Test Nikon binoculars and scopes and enter to win a pair of binoculars courtesy of Nikon Sport Optics. Maine Wildlife Park and Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife will be giving away bird posters. Sign up to win a FREE camping weekend and learn about the First Time Campers program.
  • Hawk Watch at summit from 9am to 5pm: Join a Raptor Biologist on the top of Bradbury Mountain. Learn how experts observe, identify and count all raptor and vulture species that fly past Bradbury Mountain. Note: The hike is a quarter mile and is a steep, 10-minute hike.
  • Bird Walk for Children from 10am to 11am: Naturalist Rich MacDonald, of The Natural History Center, will lead the walk, (children must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older).
  • Birding Fun & Games from 10am to 3pm: Learn to sing like a bird and birding basics through games, hands-on activities, and crafts designed for children and families of beginning birders.
  • Hawk Watch Workshop from 1 to 3pm: At the summit of Bradbury Mountain. Bring your own binoculars. Program led by Derek Lovitch of Freeport Wild Bird Supply.
  • Live Bird Presentation: Birds of Prey, including an Eagle! from 3 to 4pm: Hope Douglas, of Wind Over Wings, will present a Golden Eagle, American Kestrel, Red-tail Hawk and more.

On Sunday, Feathers over Freeport, takes palce at Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park in Freeport. Here's what is going on Sunday:

  • Live Bird Presentation: The Extraordinary Lives of Owls! from 1 to 2pm Presented by Hope Douglas, of Wind Over Wings, featuring a Great Horned Owl, Eastern Screech-Owl, Saw-whet Owl and a Common Raven.
  • Osprey Watch from 2 to 3pm Get a close look at nesting ospreys through a spotting scope. Presented by Andrew Hutchinson, Park Manager, and Tami Bill, Park Ranger.
