Fifty U.S. Senators, including Angus King from Maine, have urged the National Football League to endorse a name change for the Washington Redskins. They state that the team's name is a racial slur.

The senators, all Democrats along with Independent Angus King, signed the letter that was sent to the NFL. The letter was spearheaded by Senator Cantwell of Washington and Senator Reid of Nevada.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said in January that most football fans and Americans supported the Redskins keeping their name.
