Flood Potential Evaluations: One More Sign Spring is Near
Flowers are not the only sign winter is nearing its end. You know spring weather is getting closer and closer when officials start to look closely at the level of snow and ice in Maine and its' potential impact on Maine flooding. For me, just a sign of warmer things to come!
It is important because many cities in Maine are along a river and that can have a huge impact on a community. Officials are starting to look at Maine’s snow-pack ice conditions and stream flows to analyze the potential for spring flooding. The River Flow Advisory Commission meets at the Maine Emergency Management Agency headquarters to look at those factors and forecasts predictions in making their determination.
The commission meets in late winter to share information, examine the likelihood of spring flooding and renew operational procedures. The commission is made up of state, federal and industry representatives with an interest in hydrologic issues.
