The former Waterville High School principal accused of asking an 18-year-old student for sex has surrendered his teaching certificate in exchange for dismissal of a criminal charge.

Donald Reiter, who was fired last November, was charged with official oppression, a misdemeanor that seeks to hold those in positions of authority accountable for their actions.

The Kennebec Journal reports that the dismissal document states Reiter "agreed to permanently surrender" his teaching credentials. Defense lawyer Walter McKee said the loss of Reiter's certificate means little because his client "has zero plans of teaching again."

Both school officials and police investigated the Maine incident, and learned of similar allegations made against Reiter in New Hampshire. Under the agreement, a search warrant will be unimpounded to aid New Hampshire officials in their investigation.  —WATERVILLE, Maine (AP)
