FOX Developing Whitey Bulger Series ‘Street Soldier’ with Peter Facinelli
All year long we've seen FOX continue its commitment to "event" series like '24: Live Another Day' and 'Wayward Pines, but its latest is straight out of the headlines. The network has begun development of 'Street Soldier,' tasking 'Twilight' and recent 'Glee' star Peter Facinelli to portray the right-hand man of infamous real-life New England crime boss Whitey Bulger.
While Deadline's article on the matter only lists Facinelli to executive produce and portray "a lead," 'Street Soldier' chronicles the life of boxer/drug dealer Eddie MacKenzie as an enforcer for Bulger, detailing how he extricated himself from Whitey’s gang without getting killed. Larry Golin will pen the script for the effort, drawing base from MacKenzie’s memoir 'Street Soldier: My Life As An Enforcer For Whitey Bulger And The Boston Irish Mob,' itself co-written by Phyllis Karas.
Having evaded police for 16 years prior to this past June, Whitey Bulger has inspired numerous portrayals in the media, notably with Jack Nicholson's character in Martin Scorsese's 'The Departed,' while Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have also been developing a feature film rendition of the story with Warner Bros. 'Street Soldier' too had originally been developed as an independent feature film with A7SLE Films.
Well, what say you? Do you think FOX can pull off a Whitey Bulger crime drama as an event series? Would you watch Peter Facinelli as a 'Street Soldier'?
