Lawmakers who support an effort to bring edible landscaping to historic Capitol Park in Augusta said it will help ease hunger, raise awareness of the importance of agriculture and show support for local farmers.

According to the KJ, the State and Local Government Committee heard the plan for planting such things as blueberry, mint and potatoes. They were chosen in part because they produce food AND beautiful flowers. The seeds have been donated and volunteers will maintain the gardens. The bill will be considered by the committee in a work session in the coming weeks.
