Gov. Paul LePage has signed off on the emergency legislation to temporarily keep confidential the names of Mainers with a permit to carry concealed guns. The lawmakers moved quickly to pass the emergency legislation and the governor signed it right away. What this has done is bought them time to put forth another bill to permanently keep that information private.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the governor signed the bill soon after final House and Senate votes. This is just a step in the process. This emergency measure only lasts until April 30. That will allow lawmakers more time to consider releases of permit data in more depth and to protect that information on a more permanent basis.

This also goes to show what can happen when everyone works together. For this to have happened so quickly the bill had to pass by two-thirds in both chambers to be enacted on an emergency basis. It took effect immediately upon LePage’s signature.
