Canadian researchers have linked a weak handshake to a greater risk of a stroke and a heart attack. A weak handshake could mean your health is in trouble.

They studied 140,000 adults in 17 countries and discovered a strong hand grip is a good indicator of good health. Lack of muscle strength has long been associated with early death and disease and your ability to withstand disease is related to strength.

The study involved people in the age group of 35-70 over 4 years. They were asked to grip and squeeze an object as hard as possible and the risk of a heart attack increased with weaker grips. Other factors were taken into consideration like age, alcohol and tobacco use, education level and employment.

Dr. Mary Nagai says the findings could have positive implications because it’s a test that is simple to do and can be used by many in the health field including nurses that do house calls.
