Today (Feb 22nd) is National Margarita Day!

Whether they've got salt on the rim, sugar on the rim, on the rocks, or frozen, the margarita is an iconic cocktail!

But, where and when were they invented?  And, by who?

This video offers several theories:

Okay, so that really wasn't that much help.

Apparently, there are several origin stories for the Marg.

According to Wikipedia, the cocktail probably came from a popular American drink from the early 20th century called the "Daisy" (Margarita is Spanish for Daisy).  The difference between the two is that a Daisy is made with brandy, while the Margarita is made with tequila.

Also, a 1937 cocktail cookbook makes reference to a drink called the Picador which has the same ratios of tequila, triple sec, and lime juice as a Margarita.

Another story has Dallas socialite Margarita Sames inventing the cocktail for her guests.

Whatever story you believe, enjoy a Margarita today!  Responsibly, of course...
