The Maine House rejected a bill that would have prohibited retailers from using disposable plastic bags.

In a 84-62 vote, the Democratic-controlled House voted against the bill.

The bill would have prohibited retailers from using single-use plastic bags starting in September 2020. Expects would have been allowed for some items.

The House also voted down a separate bill that would have added a 5 cents charge per plastic bag. The city of Portland just implemented a similar law.

Supporters say that the use of reusable bags is crucial in protecting the environment. Opponents say that the ban goes too far.
