A middle-aged woman has been taken into protective custody following an incident on the Penobscot Narrows Bridge this (Thursday, December 7th) morning.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, motorists began calling at approximately 10:30 this morning to report a woman with a gun was sitting on the bridge railing.

Arriving on the scene, Maine State Troopers, Sheriff's deputies, and Bucksport police shut down traffic and began communicating with the 54-year-old woman using a PA system in one of the cruisers.  She complied, putting the gun down, and was taken into custody at about 11:15 AM.

Traffic was shut down for about 20 minutes.

The woman, who has not been charged, was transported to a Bangor hospital for evaluation.
