Kennebec River Keeps On Rising – Much Of Area Remains Under Flood Watch [VIDEO]

Mike Higgins

The waters of the Kennebec River keep right on rising throughout the day on April 16. As of noon, the roads leading to the river in Hallowell were all closed due to flooding and in Augusta, it looked like the fast-flowing river was going to burst its banks along Water Street.

Here’s a quick look at the rising water.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, there is a flood warning in place for the Kennebec River in Augusta until 4 a.m. on Friday, April 18.

Drivers should use extreme caution when going through flooded areas. According to the Portland Press Herald, a 74-year-old man from Caswell died last night when he was swept downstream after trying to cross a flooded portion of his road.

The website Ready.gov has some helpful tips when driving through flooded areas.

  • Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling.
  • A foot of water will float many vehicles
  • Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUV’s) and pick-ups.
  • Do not attempt to drive through a flooded road. The depth of water is not always obvious. The road bed may be washed out under the water, and you could be stranded or trapped.
  • Do not drive around a barricade. Barricades are there for your protection. Turn around and go the other way.
  • Do not try to take short cuts. They may be blocked. Stick to designated evacuation routes.
  • Be especially cautious driving at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.
